  Making Dreams Come True

Wouldn’t it be awesome if you never had to plan any further than the weekend? Home game Friday night, movies Saturday. But what about life after high school? Having goals and dreams is an important part of life, and your teenage years are the best time to start working towards realizing those dreams.

Even if you haven’t started high school yet, graduation day will be here before you know it, and you don’t want to be standing around thinking, “Oh no! What do I do now?” There are several paths you could choose: going away to a big university or attending one close to home, starting out at the local community college, attending a trade school, joining the military, taking time off to save money or travel.

We’ve put together a few tips on how to take steps towards reaching your goals while maintaining a healthy balance and keeping things fun.

Decide what is best for you and your interests. Some people have been dreaming of becoming a teacher or pilot since they were in grade school. Some have no clue what they want to do. If you fall into the second category, don’t be discouraged. There are millions of careers out there, and you may have to dig a little to find the perfect one. Career aptitude tests are available to help you find what fields fit your personality and interest. You might even discover a cool career you’ve never heard of, like head gardener on an organic farm. Ask your school counselor how to get your hands on an aptitude test.

Own Your Dreams! The wonderful thing about having a goal for the future is that it belongs to you! No one can tell you that it’s right or wrong. Getting there might be a challenge. From being the town veterinarian to a professional athlete, nothing is short of possible. Surround yourself with positive people who will support your decisions and provide guidance.

Get involved! Everyone has some kind of interest and being a part of what you like to do will open doors for the future. Volunteer at the animal hospital, become a tutor for a literacy program, help organize church activities, or lend a hand at the local skate park. You will gain experience and meet people who can point you in the right direction
Your goal may seem so far away, but getting there is half the fun. Get out there, ask questions, learn, and enjoy the journey!
